Death of a Gull – Kings of the South Seas

Documentation of a recording session with art-rock-folk band Kings of the South Seas for the album ‘Franklin’, with producer Ben Hillier. Filmed at St Andrew’s Arts Centre, Gravesend, on the River Thames.

The album explores the musical milieu of Arctic explorations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The church in which it was recorded contains a plaque to Sir John Franklin and his crew, who were blessed in this same church before they sailed in 1845 on an expedition to find a North-West passage for sea trade through the Canadian Arctic. They disappeared in the icy wastes and mystery still shrouds their demise.

Track: Instrumental of ‘Death of a Gull’. Filmed using an Iscorama anamorphic lens.

Below: the final track; one of ten videos I made to accompany live performances by the band.

Kings of the South Seas are Ben Nicholls, Richard Warren and Evan Jenkins.
Music produced and mixed by Ben Hillier.

Supported by the Arts Council England.
